Happy New Year people!
I’ve had a little rest this week, so thought it was an ideal time to reflect on 2023.
And, by reflect, I mean share some of my favourite pieces from the last year of The Rectangle.
Whether you’re a new reader or an old head, there’ll be something below for you to (re-)read and enjoy.
I stayed away from the most popular pieces (you can find those here if you’re interested), instead focusing more on the Deep Cuts™.
So, without any further waffling, here are five of my favourite pieces from 2023:
Bow down to time-stamping YouTubers
The internet is still filled with unheralded stars — and the people who comment with timestamps under YouTube videos are just that.
Indie Sleaze & disintegrating digital memory
There’s a period from the late 90s to early 2010s when we lived our lives digitally, but we barely backed anything up. What does it mean that those memories are gone?
Musk is two little boys in a man suit
I unravelled 2023's biggest mystery: what the hell is wrong with Elon Musk?
The philosophy of tracking music
An investigation into why we all love things like Spotify Wrapped so much.
Did you have any favourite pieces from last year? Let me know in the comments.
Also, know anyone who may want what The Rectangle is wiggling about? Why not send them this collection? I’m sure they’re gonna love it.
Anyway, thanks for an excellent 2023, and here’s to more oddball articles in 2024!
Much love,
Callum
